The mortar and pestle are a symbol of honor in the culinary arts. This artwork is part of a series called "The mortar", inspired by their importance in our kitchens.
The mortar and pestle are ancient objects that are found both in European kitchens for modern dishes and in African kitchens for traditional dishes.
For ages these two objects have been used in households, especially in villages, to grind seeds, to obtain flour, and even to make cake dough.
The mortar and its pestle, one never goes without the other.
Although their use varies from one continent to another, they are the basis of many delicate culinary preparations. The mortar is not just valuable in cooking but it is a heritage passed from mother to daughter in her new marital home. Mothers ensure that their daughters, once married, do not depend on their neighbors or co-wives. The husband makes sure that the new bride brings her mortar to their marital home. In some countries, in the past, part of the wedding ceremony was for the bride to sit on the mortar and stand up four times. By doing this, she was committing to never divorce her husband.
